In the Igbo tradition, women do not inherit properties from their fathers.

Inheritance are shared amongst sons and ‘female sons’

Questions were asked as to what it means to be a ‘female son’

In a family where no male child is being born to continue the family lineage, the first daughter of that family is to stay behind and procreate to continue her father’s lineage.

She does not marry a man,

Since she is young, her father’s kinsmen would find her a man whose family history is without a dent.

It is with this man that she may have an affair and bear sons in her father’s name.

She becomes the male child her father did not have, and all her father’s properties are left under her care for her sons to inherit when they are of age.

‘Female sons’ are highly respected amongst the Igbo people.
