In the Igbo culture, women are respected and are given their rightful place in the community.
The role of women are of considerable importance,
This is why some parents call their children ‘Nneka’
Mother is supreme.
Every girl child in Igbo land is referred to as Ada.
But first female child is referred to as Adaobi.
Adaobi means the daughter of the house.
In ancient Igbo cultures,
Every Adaobi is forbidden from marrying outside her father’s clan;
She must marry amongst her father’s people.
This culture ensures that she supervises her father’s home.
It is her place to make sure every woman married to her father’s home is well coordinated.
Though, civilization has affected this culture, but in some parts of Igbo land,
an Adaobi must not be buried outside of her father’s Obi even if she married else where.
Thus the Igbo say; “Ozu Nwada adighi ato na mba” ( The remains of an Adaobi is never abandoned in a strange land)
