The Enugu people tell of a certain water spirit that wandered from town to town before she eventually got a place.
That water spirit got to Ihuokpara, a town in Nkanu,
She appeared in form of an exhausted woman.
At that time, it was during famine.
Etavu, for that was the name of the water spirit, begged a peasant in Ihuokpara for a cup of drinking water,
But the peasant denied having any drinking water.
She further went to other villagers, but none accepted to help her.
She walked far east to another town called Amagunze.
She met a family in their farm house.
She begged for water and they not only gave her water,
They also begged that she joined them for dinner.
She was moved as to how people who have so little could afford to spare.
She joined them for dinner.
After the dinner, she asked if there is a place she could make her home of she were to come back with her family.
The kind farmer pointed somewhere and said she could build her hut there.
The next morning, they woke up to a large stream.
The farmer ran into the village to call the other villagers.
He narrated how he had been nice to a wandering woman and how she had asked for a place to build her home.
And how he and his family woke up to a mysterious river at the same spot.
The Ezemuo threw his Afa and it was revealed that the kindness of the farmer and his family to a stranger had made the goddess choose Amagunze as her home.
Rituals were done to welcome her.
From that day, they had enough water and their vegetation blossomed ones again.
Till date, Etevu stream still flows in Amagunze.
It remains a good source of water to both Amagunze and other neighbouring towns.
