While speaking on the recent impeachment of Philip Shaibu as Deputy Governor of Edo State, Public Affairs Analyst, Ope Banwo emphasized the importance of building relationships and alliances in politics.

Banwo used the example of Peter Obi to illustrate that ambition and personal qualities alone are not sufficient to succeed in politics. He suggested that Peter Obi’s failure to win may have been due to a lack of effective relationship-building and networking with key power players.

He suggested that without the support of key stakeholders and power bases, even the most capable individuals may struggle to achieve their objectives.

In his words

“Ambition alone is not enough in politics, you have to play the game. Why did Peter Obi not win? I’m a Peter Obi guy, everybody knows that but why did he not win? You have to court the relationship that will give you Power. It’s not enough for you to be good. It’s not enough for you to be intelligent. You have to court the power base, the people that will help you to achieve your objective and when you don’t do that, you lose”
