The 2024 NFL Draft order is set — minus the compensatory picks and the inevitable trades that will take place between now and late April, of course.

Arguably, the most excited fans heading into the ’24 draft are those who root for the Chicago Bears, who not only own their own first-round pick but also that of the Carolina Panthers, who finished with the league’s worst record at 2-15, thus giving Chicago the No. 1 overall pick.

The big question is whether the Bears will use the top pick to draft a quarterback such as Caleb Williams or Drake Maye or trade the selection and stick with Justin Fields under center. The Bears also currently own the ninth overall pick.

The Washington Commanders, New England Patriots, and Arizona Cardinals own the next three slots, while the Los Angeles Chargers round out the top five.

Let’s take a look at the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft order. Rounds 3-7 will be added once compensatory picks are distributed.

How the 2024 NFL Draft order was determined

The NFL draft order is determined by the reverse order of finish in the regular season

Upon the conclusion of the 2023 regular season, the 2024 NFL Draft order started to take shape as the first 18 picks of each of the seven rounds were awarded to the 18 teams that failed to reach the postseason. The following six were reserved for the six teams that lost in the Wild Card Round, and the next four were given to the four teams that lost in the Divisional Round.

It should be noted that teams within the same group that finished with the same record during the regular season cycle positions from round to round based on standard NFL tiebreaker rules.

The next two slots in each round were distributed to the losers of the conference title games, those being the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions. And the final two spots, of course, were reserved for the two teams to make the Super Bowl, with the San Francisco 49ers receiving the penultimate pick of each round as the loser and the Kansas City Chiefs receiving the final selection as the winner.
