Man arrested with counterfeit money tells police he used genuine N25,000 to buy fake N50,000 notes

A young man who was arrested with fake naira notes after he used one of the notes to pay for his transport fare has told men of the Enugu State Police Command that he used genuine N25,000 to buy the fake N50,000 notes in N1,000 denominations, it was gathered on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The state police command, which announced the development on its X handle, gave the name of the man as Mmaduabuchi Okonkwo, aged 24 years, adding that he was arrested by police operatives serving in Abakaliki Road Police Division of the state police command at the Old IMT Bus Stop in the city.

It was gathered that his arrest followed an alarm raised by the driver of the vehicle he boarded after he gave the man one of the fake notes in his possession. The driver was said to have noticed that the money was a counterfeit, and the alarm he raised attracted the attention of other passengers and passers-by.

He was said to have been apprehended by the people and handed over to the police operatives who reportedly raced to the scene after getting information about the incident. At the point of his arrest, N40,000 of the counterfeit money was said to have been found on him.

According to the command, during his interrogation, he was said to have told the operatives that he used genuine N25,000 to buy the fake N50,000 from the sellers, adding that he had already spent N10,000 out of the fake money, remaining N40,000 before he was apprehended.

He was said to have given more information to the operatives about those who sold the money to him and he is expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
