Igwe Israel Eloebo Iweka (1879-1934) was one of Nigeria’s early Civil Engineers who built the massive Iweka Road, Onitsha in 1924.

Igwe Israel Eloebo Iweka (1879-1934) was one of Nigeria’s early Civil Engineers who built the massive Iweka Road, Onitsha in 1924.

Iweka also wrote the first history of the Igbo people in Igbo Language and translated it into English himself in 1922.

He was made the king of Obosi in 1932 which is Eze. But today kings in Obosi are being referred as Igwe. This is one of indication that original name for king in Igbo is Eze. As we also know that Nri that had their king around 16th century called their king Eze. Eze Iweka eldest son, Isaac Iweka (1911-1996) was the first Igbo to have a degree in Civil Engineering from the Imperial College, London in 1939.
