According to Punch Newspapers report published on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 The Board of Inquiry, established by the Defence Headquarters to investigate the tragic killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama, Delta State, is set to commence its proceedings today in Warri. Chaired by Air Vice Marshal David Ajayi, the board aims to gather crucial information from various stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, and residents.
In a statement made to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Warri, Air Vice Marshal David Ajayi emphasized the board’s mission to uncover facts and promote healthy communication between the military and local communities. He stressed that the inquiry’s findings would contribute to improving civil-military relations and fostering economic activities in affected areas.
However, leaders from Okuama expressed reluctance to participate in the inquiry, citing safety concerns due to ongoing military operations and displacement of residents. Despite their absence, leaders from Okoloba community, embroiled in a land dispute with Okuama, signaled their intention to attend the inquiry.
The board’s sessions are scheduled to begin in the morning, with meetings planned with Okoloba community leaders in the afternoon. Additionally, the panel will reconvene in Bayelsa State later in the week to further address the issue.
Meanwhile, amidst the turmoil, Madam Esther Obarogheruo, a 106-year-old woman displaced by the military operation, appealed for assistance from the Delta State government and local authorities.
Criticism has been leveled against the composition of the panel, with concerns raised about the military’s role in investigating a matter where it is implicated. Ejedegba Innocent, a former lawyer for Okuama community, questioned the fairness of the process and emphasized the need for an independent inquiry to ensure justice.
Despite the challenges, efforts are underway to present a unified front before the inquiry. However, uncertainties persist as displaced residents remain inaccessible, hindering effective communication and collaboration.
