10 worst-governed countries in Africa according to World Economics

One of the major problems stalling Africa’s economic progress is poor governance.

As previously discussed, good governance is a cornerstone for sustainable progress and societal well-being globally, and many countries, including those in Africa, are actively working to make sure they get it right.

Using the World Economics governance index, we saw how some African countries are already doing in this regard.

Mauritius for example topped the list as the best-governed country in Africa, boasting a grade of B and an index score of 69.3. Namibia follows closely in second place with an index score of 69.1, while South Africa secures the third position with a score of 66.9.

Good governance is crucial for economic development especially in Africa, where abundant natural and human resources could revolutionize the entire economy.

However, the continent still faces huge challenges, with some countries ranking poorly on governance index. Indicators such as corruption perception, rule of law, press freedom, and political rights serve as benchmarks for evaluating governance performance.

From rampant corruption and lack of transparency to authoritarian regimes and human rights violations, the adverse effects of poor governance have become evident in many countries.

Some African countries are faced with political instability, illegitimate governance, and economic crises, which all bring to the fore the urgent need for comprehensive governance reform.

According to the Index, Libya is ranked at the top of the list as the worst-governed country in Africa. It received a grade of E and an index score of 15.4.
