When the list of ministers came out several months back, many were shocked when the name of Ex-Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike was announced as the new FCT Minister, for many reasons.
Of course, everyone knows that Wike is a controversial personality and politician.
He was Governor of Rivers State for 8 years. He is also not a member of APC and has repeatedly told anyone who cares to listen that he will never decamp from PDP to APC.
There is also the fact that the previous holders of that office have been mainly from the North. So, there was a general feeling that Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu will appoint another Northerner to take up that portfolio.
But Pres. Tinubu has other ideas.
He wanted someone from the Southern part of Nigeria to be FCT Minister. He wanted to break the jinx. He wanted someone from the South-East or South-South. He ruled out South-West, for obvious reasons.
He also wanted a tough person a no nonsense person who could take hard decisions. He had been briefed that the FCT was in a mess. And that there were illegal activities going on there.
Don’t also forget that the population of the Igbos in the FCT is huge. There are so many Igbo businessmen in the FCT. That was why Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi won in those areas.
President Tinubu scored less votes at Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja in the 2023 Presidential election and with much Igbo population that voted Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi, Wike now holds the magic wand for Control and Command.
Insiders say part of the assignment given to Wike by Mr. President is to correct all the shortcomings at the FCT and put in place policies that will endear the President to the huge Igbo population living in the FCT.
Of course, between now and 2027 Wike is expected to ensure that he makes FCT good for the President to win, to attract huge votes, come 2007.
Since Wike came in he has paved the way for a few Igbos to come into the FCT to occupy key positions. He has also brought in some from the South-South.
Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is currently having new players who are Rivers born politicians. Brother Felix OBUAH who has been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Co-ordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council. On the 12th March, 2024, Brother Felix Amaechi Obuah on his Instagram account announced it: “I have been appointed as the Co-ordinatorAbuja Metropolitan Management Council. Thank You President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Thank You Nigeria.”
If you think that 2027 re- election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is far away, wait until Rivers State former Gov and FCT Abuja Minister Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike tells you about his political structure and why nobody will restructure his political machine for 2027 general elections.
In 2012, while the then incumbent governor of Rivers State Rt.Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi CRA was basking in the euphoria of 2011 relection victory, Nyesom Wike as his Director General of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi re-election Governorship Campaign Organization was setting strategies for 2015 elections in motion ahead of other sleepy politicians. First, Wike positioned Brother Felix Obuah to replace late Godspower Umejuru Ake as Chairman of People’s Democratic Party PDP. While 2012 PDP state delegates convention was held at the Alfred Diete – Spiff Sports Complex, Brother Felix Obuah and Wike had alternative plan with real stakeholders outside Governor Amaechi’s political structure as original list of delegate’s recognised by Independent National Electoral Commission INEC was in their custody stamped and delivered with voting results electing Brother Felix Obuah as Chairman who as well as other members of opposition political parties formed All Progressive Congress APC.
In 2015 Brother Felix Obuah and Nyesom Wike as Governorship candidate of Rivers State won the election and formed th government. Brother Felix Obuah was appointed as Sole Administrator Rivers State Waste Management Agency -RIWAMA and Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management
It was Brother Felix Obuah who in 2023 attempted and aspired to be elected as Governor of Rivers State during the gubernatorial primary election where he only got one vote as he walked out in protest as Siminialayi Fubara’s victory was announced.
It was on record that in 2003, while Wike held sway as elected Local Government Area chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council Brother Felix Obuah was enjoying his victory as Elected Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government Area.
Now, having been appointed Coordinator Abuja Municipal Management Council, Brother Felix Obuah is expected to re-enact the winning streaks for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027 at FCT Abuja with the adequate control and command of voters in the Abuja Municipal with high population and demographic voting pattern as he may bring back his Go Round Community a Non Governmental Organisation NGO that he runs with “Go Round Football Club” that discovered Super Eagles Goal Keeper Stanley Nwabali.
