Throughout two Women’s Premier League (WPL) seasons, the Gujarat Giants (GG) have only won two of the twelve matches played. Beth Mooney and company haven’t won in four games this season, and more worryingly, they haven’t shown that they can even compete with the other teams.
That is a terrible indictment on GG‘s roster building, which has been atrociously subpar for the past two seasons. However, it is not Gujarat’s only problem; they have also made questionable selection judgments and even more bizarre choices regarding the roles that selected players would play.
For instance, rather than beginning the batting, their finest batter, Phoebe Litchfield, has been hitting in the middle order. While Mooney has hardly scored any runs, Ash Gardner and other players are under tremendous pressure to save the squad.
Gujarat Giants’s position at the bottom of the WPL 2024 points standings is hardly surprising. As harsh as it may seem, they won’t be expected to win when they play the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Match 13 of the league on Wednesday, March 6 in Delhi.
RCB, who are ranked second in the rankings, have been among the stronger teams in the competition thus far. They are coming off a courageous victory over the UP Warriorz (UPW) that ended a two-game losing run, and they cannot afford to let the bottom-seeded Giants get the better of them.
Although it is a distant memory, GG can find solace in the knowledge that they defeated RCB in one of their two WPL victories. In their most recent encounter, Bangalore easily won by eight wickets with over seven overs remaining.
