The Awka, Anambra State capital, was thrown into turmoil over the weekend as a cult war erupted, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals.
Reports gathered by the Nigerian Tribune indicate that one victim met his demise on Saturday at Udeke Street in Umudioka village, while the second fatality occurred on Sunday at Parker’s Joint in Umuogbunu village, both located within Awka metropolis.
According to an eyewitness, the first victim had visited a Point of Sale (POS) terminal to withdraw money when members of a rival cult group spotted him. They proceeded to pursue him to Parker’s Joint, where they fatally shot him.
Sources revealed that the rival cult group had previously visited the victim’s family home, inquiring about his whereabouts. However, the victim’s father claimed to be unaware of his son’s location.
“He was pursued by rival cult and he ran into the Parkers joint, where he was shot at head and he died instantly” the witness stated.
Recalled that last week Easter Sunday and Monday nine persons were reportedly killed in a cult war in Awka.
One of the elders in Awka who spoke and never wanted his name on print for fear of attack said that the cult operation could not be so free in Awka if there were no sponsors.
According to him, some people are sponsoring the cult war in the city using the children of the poor while their children are abroad studying.
He called on the state government to intervene and save Awka city from this senseless killing going on over the years.
When contacted the Anambra State Police command spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga, via telephone said there was no such report before him.
According to him, he was not aware of any cult killing in Awka on Saturday and Sunday.
