Shaibu Heads To Court Over Impeachment By Edo Assembly

Barely hours after his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly, former deputy governor of the state, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has vowed to challenge his removal from office in court.
Shaibu, in a video, described his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly, as “a dangerous descent to dictatorship and threat to democracy, “ adding that he is being persecuted over his ambition to succeed his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The former deputy governor said the action by the House of Assembly was a flagrant abuse of power and betrayal of trust that the people of Edo placed on their elected officials.
He vowed to fight his impeachment, which he called illegal and unjust, with every ounce of strength in his vein for the sake of the people of Edo State.

Shaibu’s impeachment paved the way for swearing in of 38 years old Engr. Marvellous Godwins Omobayo as the new deputy governor.
Omobayo was sworn in by the Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, at a ceremony in Government House. The event was attended by party faithful and traditional rulers mainly for Akoko-Edo local government areas of the state.
The impeachment of Shaibu, a first in the state, is, so far, the high point of the rift between the governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his estranged former deputy.
The plot to remove Shaibu had started almost one year ago when he went to court asking that it stop the Edo State House of Assembly from impeaching him. However, the process was reactivated shortly after Shaibu emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the parallel primary election. Governor Obaseki backed Asue Ighodalo who won the primary election conducted by the PDP national leadership.
However, 20 lawmakers, including the House Speaker, Hon Blessing Agbebaku, were present at yesterday’s impeachment proceeding. However, while 18 members voted for the impeachment, one member abstained.

The Federal Government has commenced distribution of 26,404 bags of maize, millet and sorghum to vulnerable Nigerians in Sokoto State as palliatives.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, inaugurated the distribution in Sokoto on Sunday.
Speaking while flagging off the distribution, Kyari said the effort was aimed at cushioning the economic hardship faced by citizens in the state, with the gesture to cover all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
He explained that the exercise was part of the fulfilment of President Bola Tinubu’s promise to reduce the impact of the current economic hardship in the country, given the approval for the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities from the National Strategic Reserve
In his remarks, Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State said the current economic hardship affected people across the globe and commended President Tinubu on the initiative.
He assured of adherence to stipulated guidelines for the distribution of the items and urged committee members to live up to expectations.
He charged committee members to be transparent in all dealings and promised to augment the Federal Government’s efforts through the provision of more palliative items.
Edo: I won’t drag power with you – Dep Gov Godwins promises Obaseki

The new deputy governor of Edo State, Omobayo Godwins, has vowed never to drag power with Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Godwins promised to work with Obaseki to the end of the governor’s eight-year term on November 12, 2024.
He spoke while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday.
Godwins said he is learning on the job and won’t hesitate to do all that his principal instructs him to do.
According to him: “It’s okay with me. Life is a process. At 37+, I am already a deputy governor, it has improved my political outlook and I am not in a rush to drag with my governor.
“Whatever he say I should is what I will do. He knows my strength. So, I will dwell on my strength when it comes to adding value. Politically, I am learning on the job.”
Godwins was appointed deputy governor following the impeachment of Philip Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly after the adoption of the report of Justice S. A. Omonua (retd)-led impeachment panel.
The panel was set up by the Chief Judge of Edo State to investigate allegations of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.
Eighteen out of the 20 lawmakers that attended the plenary on Monday, April 8, 2024 voted in favour of the impeachment while one voted against.
Tinubu support groups distribute 50,000 food packs

A coalition of youth support groups of President Bola Tinubu is set to conclude the distribution of 50,000 family food packs to vulnerable Nigerians across the country during the holy month of Ramadan.
A Monday statement said the groups were supported by ministers and special advisers to the president to assist vulnerable families across Nigeria during the holy month of Ramadan.
It noted the distribution of free family food boxes to 50,000 vulnerable families in the country was set to conclude on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
It partly read, “Each family food box contains dry food items that include rice, semolina, tomato paste and other food supplies to feed a family for five days. The distribution to families across Nigeria in the past three weeks has been carried out through various community-focused outreaches. The Family Food Box Distribution Initiative is scheduled to end across all the geopolitical regions in Nigeria this week.
The Patron of the City Boy Movement, Seyi Tinubu, in his comments, thanked the supporters, volunteers, and partners for their valuable contributions to the success of the programme. He expressed his appreciation to all the private sector partners who donated various items and the volunteers drawn from every section of the country, regardless of creed, tribe, and religion, who showed that the spirit of community and caring for one another is still strong and alive in Nigeria. He prayed for the Almighty to bless and reward everyone participating in this programme.”
To mark the end of the Ramadan celebration, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Aishetu Ndayako.
