Rep seeks Nnamdi Kanu’s release

The lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Abia State, Obinna Aguocha, has urged President Bola Tinubu to use his office to secure the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu has been in detention since his extradition in June 2020, facing charges of alleged terrorism by the Federal Government. Despite a 2022 Court of Appeal order for his release on health grounds, the Federal Government appealed to the Supreme Court, directing Kanu to resume trial at the Federal High Court. He has remained in the detention facility of the Department of State Services.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Aguocha, a member of the Labour Party, emphasized that there’s no justification for Kanu’s continued custody, especially when others like Godwin Emefiele, Omoyele Sowore, and Sunday Igboho are free.
Aguocha stressed the importance of Tinubu’s intervention, stating, “I hereby appeal to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, to use his esteemed office to ensure the unconditional and immediate release of citizen Nnamdi Kanu as a gesture of goodwill towards the peaceful development of the South East and the well-being of Ndi Igbo.”
He pointed out the disparate treatment of Kanu compared to other accused citizens, questioning, “Is there one set rule for other Nigerians from different zones and another for Igbo’s within the South East zone?
He added that Kanu, Sowore, Igboho and Emefiele are “The four citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria accused by the government of various alleged offences.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has instructed that the body of makeup artiste, Abigael Frederick, who died in a boat accident with other crew members, be returned to the state for a proper burial.
This directive was communicated by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ekerete Udoh, via his X account on Saturday.
Gunmen attack Ortom’s ex-aide, abduct wife, housemaid

Gunmen have abducted the wife, Mrs Abigail Orbunde and housemaid, Patience Ogute, of Terwase Orbunde, a former Chief of Staff to the immediate past governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom.
Orbunde, alongside his wife and the housemaid, was said to have gone to inspect his farm located close to the Genocide Cemetery along Mobile Barracks-Welfare Quarters Road in Makurdi, the state capital on Friday, when they were attacked.
The incident, according to a source who witnessed the attack, happened at about 6 pm on Friday.
The eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised by the family to speak on the issue, said, “After the inspection of the work, five gunmen suddenly attacked the former Chief of Staff to the immediate past governor, his wife and housemaid who were on the farm along Mobile Barracks/Welfare Quarters in Makurdi.
“This happened around 6 pm on Friday and the gunmen opened fire and the bullet hit Orbunde, while they ordered him and the women to follow them to an unknown destination.”
The shooting was said to have caused villagers and passersby to scamper for safety in different directions.
Another eyewitness who watched from a far distance said the gunmen marched the victims on a footpath but later abandoned Orbunde who was said to be bleeding profusely and unable to walk fast.
“As they abandoned the man, the gunmen then whisked the women to an unknown destination while good Samaritans conveyed Orbunde to hospital,” the eyewitness said.
Orbunde’s close ally and media consultant, Tahav Argezua, confirmed the attack on his Facebook page.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, it’s true, the DPO in charge of the area has informed me,” Anene said in a telephone chat on Saturday.

Eno expressed deep sorrow over Frederick’s death, describing her as a shining example of the state’s youths who answered the call to excel.
The statement read, “His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Governor, Akwa Ibom State, is aware of the tragic boat mishap, which occurred a few days ago, on River Niger, involving some Nollywood actors and other supporting crew members while on a trip to a movie location.
“One of the victims of that accident, Ms Abigael Edith Frederick, was a quintessential example of our young people who have harkened to our clarion call for them to arise and shine.
“She was a 24-year-old graduate of Theatre Arts, who had found her passion as a make-up artist.
“We are deeply saddened by her painful passing and on behalf of the government and people of Akwa Ibom State, we sympathise with her family, the Nollywood community and her friends and colleagues over this sad loss.

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 61 suspected thugs from across the five emirate councils in the state for their alleged involvement in thuggery activities.
This was disclosed in a post on the cmmand’s X handle on Saturday.
The post read, “#Photo News: Sallah Day-2 (Hawan Daushe): The Kano State Police Command, in continuation with its efforts to clamp down on all forms of thuggery activities and ensure hitch-free Sallah festivities, arrested additional 61 suspected thugs bringing the total to 115 suspects from across the five emirate councils in the state.
“CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel also commended the combined inter agencies security teams for keeping the state safe.”
