The place was not built by the government – Shaibu’s Aide Reacts To His Security Post Demolition.

According to a report by Punch, the security post situated at the former residence of impeached deputy governor Philip Shaibu in Benin City’s Government Reservation Area (GRA) was demolished by representatives of the Edo State Network and Public Works Volunteers.

This action followed Shaibu’s recent impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly on charges of dishonesty and divulging state secrets. A seven-member panel chaired by Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the state’s chief judge, reviewed the report leading to Shaibu’s removal from office. Subsequently, Marvellous Omobayo was swiftly appointed as the new deputy governor by Governor Godwin Obaseki.

In response to the demolition, a senior official involved in the procedure justified the action by stating that Shaibu forfeited his entitlement to such facilities upon leaving public office and transitioning to private citizenship. Meanwhile, Eta Uzamere, the State Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, refuted claims linking his ministry to the destruction of the security post, clarifying that his agency was not involved.

An aide to Philip Shaibu expressed dismay over the demolition, asserting that Shaibu personally constructed the security post and emphasizing that it was not a government-built structure. The aide criticized the state government for what he perceived as an act of cruelty towards Shaibu, highlighting the contentious circumstances surrounding Shaibu’s impeachment and subsequent legal challenges.
