According to the Northern Elders Forum, the northern area has regretted supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
The elders observed that the North had learned its lesson from the error of electing the All Progressives Congress (APC) nominee for president in the 2023 election.
The group recently criticized the president harshly for Nigeria’s rising level of insecurity.
Within months of taking office, the elders claimed the current government had failed to safeguard Nigerians, as evidenced by the recent kidnapping of Kuriga schoolchildren in Kaduna.
Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the forum spokeswoman, stated in an interview with The Guardian on Tuesday that moving forward, the area will give unity and consensus first priority while choosing a candidate for Nigeria’s highest post.
Remember that Tinubu garnered 8,794,726 votes in the 2023 presidential election to win the presidency?
A total of 5.4 million votes were cast for the president by the northern regions of North West, North East, and North Central.
When asked about the former governor of Anambra, Peter Obi’s visit and contributions to towns in the north, Suleiman responded, “The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future.”
“They have learned from their past missteps and will strive to select a candidate who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians.”
“Moving forward, the North will be more cautious in selecting a candidate for the presidency.”
“They will prioritize someone who is seen as more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.”
