The history of Easter traces back to ancient pagan traditions, particularly related to spring festivals celebrating fertility and rebirth. One prominent influence is the festival of Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of dawn and fertility, from which the name “Easter” originated. Other influences include the Roman festival of Saturnalia and the celebration of the vernal equinox.
Early Christians adopted and adapted these pagan customs, merging them with the religious significance of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Over time, Easter became a Christian holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus, while still retaining some elements of its pagan roots, such as eggs and bunnies symbolising fertility and new life.
