Allegations from the Presidency claim that the recent surge in kidnappings in Nigeria is part of a larger scheme by subregional geopolitical forces to destabilize President Bola Tinubu’s government.
During an appearance on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, accused these forces of working against Nigeria’s stability.
Ngelale disclosed that the Federal Government is receiving support from the United States to facilitate the release of kidnapped students in Kaduna as part of efforts to counter these conspiracies.
Speaking on the program themed ‘Counting the Cost of Presidents Tinubu’s Reforms,’ Ngelale highlighted the challenges posed by these sub-regional forces.
These claims come in the wake of the kidnapping of over 280 students and teachers from schools in Kaduna, where terrorists reportedly abducted them after opening fire in the Kuriga area of Chikun Local Government Area.
The UN also confirmed the abduction of over 200 individuals from an internally displaced persons camp in Borno State, with women, boys, and girls among those captured.
Ngelale reassured that the government is actively addressing the situation with support from the US to secure the release of the abductees and counter the regional threats.
Emphasizing the government’s proactive stance, Ngelale stated, “We are vigilant and collaborating with international partners to ensure that those behind these regional threats face justice and are neutralized in the future.”
Regarding security measures, he noted efforts to expand coverage to vulnerable communities in the North, in addition to the progress made in securing other regions like the Southeast and Southwest.
He echoed the First Lady’s call for capital punishment for kidnappers, advocating for stringent legislative reforms to deter such crimes effectively.
“A clear message must be sent through robust legal reforms that any individual involved in kidnapping will face the death penalty. This uncompromising stance is crucial for resolving this issue and ensuring its enforcement,” Ngelale emphasized.
