In a significant statement on his verified Twitter account, former Nigerian senator Shehu Sani echoed the sentiments regarding the imperative for Nigeria to emulate neighboring countries in processing its natural resources locally.
Citing examples from Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, and Mali, where gold, uranium, and lithium are being processed within national borders respectively, Sani emphasized the need for Nigeria to follow suit with its crude oil resources.
In his words, he said;”Burkina Faso wants to process its Gold deposits locally. Niger Republic wants to process their Uranium locally. Mali wants to process its Lithium locally. That is the way to go with Nigeria’s crude oil. This country’s refineries must work”.
A focal point of Sani’s message is the revitalization of Nigeria’s refinery infrastructure. Despite being a major oil producer in Africa, Nigeria has grappled with insufficient refining capacity, resulting in a heavy reliance on imported petroleum products and substantial revenue loss.
Sani’s call for the effective functioning of Nigeria’s refineries resonates with broader efforts to promote industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification.
