Police confirm arrest of community leader over alleged vandalism of Abia govt palm oil estate

The Zone 9 Police Command, Umuahia, has confirmed the arrest of the President General of Okon Aku community in Ohafia council area, Abia State, Mr. Mecha Ume, over alleged vandalism of equipment at a palm oil estate located in the community belonging to the state government.

Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO,Zone 9, Umuahia, DSP Bruno Iheanetu disclosed that Mecha and another suspect, who was arrested last Saturday, allegedly fingered the community President General in the matter.

Kwamkwam news had reported that three suspects were earlier arrested by soldiers attached to the 14 Brigade,Ohafia, while loading the vandalised equipment into a waiting truck inside the Palm Estate.

They were handed over to the Zone 9 Police Command for further investigation.

The PPRO further stated that the investigation is still ongoing.

The palm oil estate was established in 1961 by Eastern Region Estate Investment (EREI) during the regime of Dr. Michael Okpara as the Premier of the defunct Eastern Region.
