According to This Day Live, In the aftermath of the tragic killing of 17 soldiers in Delta State’s Okuama community, tensions rise as accusations fly between the community and the military. The Niger Delta community mourns the loss of lives while condemning what they perceive as heavy-handed tactics by the military, hindering their ability to return home and properly bury their dead. ARISE NEWS Channel interviewed General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, who clarified the military’s mission to apprehend the perpetrators.
General Musa expressed condolences for the soldiers’ deaths and acknowledged the community’s grievances. However, he countered accusations of military aggression, asserting that the attack on the military was premeditated by a group profiting from crude oil theft. He condemned the violence as unacceptable and emphasized the military’s mandate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to apprehend the assailants and recover stolen ammunition.
Amidst mourning and accusations, the situation in Okuama remains tense. While the community mourns its losses and voices concerns about military actions, the military remains resolute in its pursuit of justice, citing the mandate from the Commander-in-Chief to apprehend those responsible for the attack on peacekeeping forces. The search for answers and accountability continues amidst a backdrop of grief and apprehension in Delta State.
He said: We felt very bad when criminals took laws into their hands to attack the military. The Okuama attack on the military was premeditated. A group of criminals, cultists, and militants, decided to take laws into their hands because they make so much money from crude oil theft. They killed the commanding officer and his team while on a peacekeeping mission to the community and that is unacceptable. We are happy that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has given us his mandate to arrest the killers and recover the ammunition.
