Sen. George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, says Nigeria Digital ID4D Project will help in revolutionising identification and access to services.
Akume said this on Tuesday at the inauguration of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Ecosystem Steering Committee in Abuja.
According to him, the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project holds immense potential in revolutionising identification and access to services.
He emphasised the need to address
challenges related to data privacy, accessibility, and citizen engagement to ensure success of the project.
In her remarks, the Director-General, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mrs Abisoye Coker-Odusote, emphasised the importance of digital identity in driving socio-economic development and citizens empowerment.
She expressed confidence in the
project’s transformative impact, saying she was looking forward to see the committee’s collective efforts towards achieving its mandate.
According to her, the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Programme represents a bold and ambitious initiative aimed at leveraging digital technologies to enhance service delivery, improve governance, and unlock opportunities for our citizens’.
“The steering committee’s mandate extends beyond policy formulation to fostering a collaborative governance structure that will oversee the project’s
implementation.
“The committee was tasked with ensuring that the project aligns with international best practices and respects the privacy and rights of a Nigerian,” she said.
Coker-Odusote commended all stakeholders for their unwavering support and commitment towards national endeavour
According to her, the commission looks forward to working closely with the Steering Committee and all partners to realise the vision of a digitally empowered Nigeria.
The Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Steering Committee includes the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the
Federation (Chairman), Minister of Finance, Minister of Budget and National Planning and Minister of Health.
Others are Minister of Education, Minister of Communications and Digital
Economy, and Director-General of NIMC, amongst others.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inauguration signifies a pivotal step in Nigeria’s commitment to achieving digital transformation and fostering inclusive development across the nation.
The project’s vision is to establish a secure and verifiable digital identity for every Nigerian, thereby enhancing service delivery, governance, and creating opportunities for growth in the digital economy
