South Carolina freshman guard against the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team

A Minnesota native, Tessa Johnson, played a crucial role in South Carolina’s national title win. Johnson, who won the 2023 Miss Basketball Award from St. Michael-Albertville High School, led the Gamecocks with 19 points in their 87-75 victory over Iowa in the national championship game in Cleveland.

This victory marked Johnson’s second championship win in as many years. In the previous year, she scored 27 points in St. Michael-Albertville’s 71-70 victory over Hopkins in the Class 4A state championship game.

Despite trailing by as many as 11 points in the first quarter and entering the second quarter down by seven, Johnson and the Gamecocks mounted a comeback for the win, despite Caitlin Clark’s impressive 30-point performance for Iowa.

Johnson’s contributions included making two 3-pointers in the third quarter, helping South Carolina extend their lead. She also scored the first basket of the fourth quarter, giving her team an 11-point lead. Additionally, her two key free throws in the middle of the fourth quarter helped secure the Gamecocks’ victory, putting them up by eight points.
