A 94-year-old woman who was described as the first ever female police officer in Nigeria and who retired as a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) has been celebrated by the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr Tunji Disu who paid her a visit, it was gathered on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.
The woman, Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga (Retired), was said to have enlisted in the police force in 1955, 69 years ago, and rose through the ranks before she retired as a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

The Rivers State Police Command, which announced the visit of Disu to the old woman on its X handle, added that she was elated to see the police commissioner in her home.
The command disclosed that the woman said she was elated because Disu is the first ever police commissioner in the state to visit her at home.
According to available records, retired DCP Okuyiga enlisted as one of the 20 female members of the 1955 intakes. However, while others dropped out of the force, and others did not get to the officers rank, she became an officer and got to the level of DCP before retiring.
The police command wrote: “CP Olatunji Disu visited 94-year-old female police veteran enlisted in 1955. DCP Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga (retired). The first female police officer.”
