According to newsmen, The Federal Government has given its approval for an increase in the salary of civil servants, ranging from 25% to 35%, across the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures.
Additionally, pensioners under the Defined Benefits Scheme (DBS) will also benefit from a pay rise.
This decision was made public on a day when labor leaders highlighted the challenges faced by workers and the masses over the past year.
The six Consolidated Salary Structures include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
The increase in salary took effect from January 1, 2024.
Similarly, pensioners under the DBS will witness a rise in pension, ranging from 20% to 28%, also effective from January 1, 2024.
This decision was made in accordance with Section 173 (3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
As workers worldwide celebrate Workers Day, labor unions emphasized the challenging year experienced by workers and the masses due to government policies.
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, echoed these sentiments, stating that Nigerian workers have faced unprecedented hardship as a result of government policies that have neglected their welfare.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has declared Workers Day, May 1st, as a public holiday to allow workers to celebrate.
Responding to the concerns raised by labor leaders, the All Progressives Congress (APC) emphasized the need for proper engagement and the implementation of measures to mitigate the impact of government policies on workers.
However, labor leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s approach, stating that workers have been subjected to one anti-poor policy after another, exacerbating their socio-economic conditions.
They called for fair treatment of workers, emphasizing the importance of a living wage and protection of workers’ rights.
In solidarity with Nigerian workers, telecommunications company, Globacom, praised their resilience and commitment despite the challenges they face.
The Minister of Interior also extended his wishes for a happy celebration to workers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to prioritizing their safety and well-being.
