Jimi Solanke whose stage name was ‘Baba Agba’ or ‘Uncle Jimi’ was born on the 4th of July 1942, in Lagos State, Nigeria. He had his primary education at Olowogbowo Methodist School before proceeding to Odogbolu Grammar School, Ogun State for his secondary education.

Jimi Solanke holds a diploma certificate in drama from the University of Ibadan. He also holds a degree from the Department of Dramatic Arts at the University of Ife.

Jimi Solanke Career

Jimi Solanke went to the United States where he created a drama group called The African Review. His group where known to put on African clothing specifically Yoruba Costume. Later on, he became a master storyteller before he returned to Nigeria to work with the Nigerian Television Authority in 1986.

Jimi Solanke created Storyland, where he told stories at the same time, and played his guitar with kids surrounding him, singing and dancing. He also starred in several shows on Nigeria Television Authority including The Bar Beach Show, For Better For Worst, Village Headmaster, Sango, and many more.

Jimi Solanke began his professional acting career when he became one of the pioneer members of the Orisun Theatre Group, founded by Wole Soyinka. He also appeared in several movies including The Divorce, Kurumi, Ovoramwen Nogbaisi, Death and the King’s Horseman, Siswe Bansi’s Death, and Jagunjagun. Besides being an actor, he was also known for his popular folk songs like Onile Gogoro, Eje ka jo, Jenrokan, and Na Today You Come.
