Impeachment: Reactions As Philip Shaibu Says This Is Not Just An Attack On Me As An Individual

Recently impeached Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu released a video clip on his official X handle, formerly known as Twitter, to react to his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly.

“My good people of Edo State, I thank you all for standing by me against these troubling circumstances as the deputy governor of Edo State,” Shaibu said in the video. “I am grateful to each and every one of you.” To address the recent happenings that have taken place in our beloved state, I come before you with a heavy heart but a determined spirit. I am here to speak about the events that have taken place. The illegitimate impeachment of the Edo State House of Assembly on the basis of fabricated allegations is something that I strongly condemn. “This is not just an attack on me as an individual; it is also an attack on the very democratic principle that we hold dear,” he continued. Not only is it a hazardous opposition that may lead to authoritarianism, but it also poses a threat to the cornerstone of our democracy. My aspiration to run for governor of Edo State in 2024 as a candidate for the People’s Democratic Party, which is a constitutionally protected right for every citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was the immediate cause of my impeachment. Aspiration is faced with opposition in our political landscape, and those in power aim to quiet opposition through unlawful means. This is a terrible truth that deserves to be acknowledged. To serve the noble people of Edo State with honesty and integrity is the mission that I have made my life’s work. The lives of our folks have been significantly improved as a result of my persistent efforts. In addition, he stated, “I have committed myself to upholding the principles of democracy and justice, and yet, in return, I am confronted with accusations that have no basis!”
