“What we artist are making right now is afrobeat(s) and not afrobeat from Fela Kuti. This word afrobeats with an “s” is different from afrobeat and I can explain this. “Oleko” is one of the first afrobeats song to be playdlisted on BBC Radio. At the time, they didn’t know what to call our music and they couldn’t call it afrobeat so we told them to put an “s” behind it to make it afrobeat(s). When I say we I’m talking about me, Ricky Davis, Lyon. I’m not saying we came up with the name afrobeats but if you check the history, Oleko is actually the first afrobeats labelled record because they had to label it in the radio station. So we put the “s” on afrobeat to make it afrobeats because we couldn’t just call it afrobeat. That’s my own opinion about this whole afrobeats saga.” Ice Prince

A song is termed an afrobeats song if you use two or more sub saharan musical instruments in your music so it’s used to generalize African music‼️
