A military convoy, including a Lieutenant and several soldiers, have fallen victim to a deadly ambush by the Boko Haram sect along the Biu-Buratai-Buni Yadi road, a notorious hotspot for terrorist attacks linking Borno and Yobe states.
According to the VANGUARD, the assault, occurring on Thursday evening, resulted in significant casualties, intensifying concerns over the security of the region.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity with the Vanguard reported that the attack led to the tragic deaths of the lieutenant officer, a driver, a gunner, and four other soldiers, marking a somber moment for the Nigerian military.
The encounter near Kamuya village, close to Buratai – the hometown of the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Retired) – also saw the killing of an undisclosed number of terrorists during the fierce exchange of gunfire.
He said, “Yes based on the situation report, soldiers of 135 Special Force BN FOB in Buratai were ambushed by terrorists on their way to Damaturu, the Yobe state capital to buy fuel.
“Unfortunately, one (1) officer was killed, including a driver, gunner plus four (4) other escort”.
This development comes barely a month after 17 military personnel were ambushed and killed while responding to a distress call during a communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities.
It was gathered that the troops were on a peace mission in the Bomadi Local Government Area when they were surrounded and attacked by community youths.
The military personnel, however, were buried amid tears in Abuja on Wednesday.
Reacting to this, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, during the burial ceremony, affirmed his resolve to pursue and bring to justice those responsible for the deaths of military personnel in Delta.
The Chief of Defence Staff pledged to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice.
Musa said, “To the perpetrators of violence who seek to sow division and fear among our people, know this: our resolve will not waver. We will hunt you down, we will bring you to justice, and we will restore peace and security to every nook and cranny of our dear nation.”
