The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, Afenifere, has strongly condemned the invasion of the Oyo State House of Assembly in Ibadan by suspected Yoruba nation agitators. In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Comrade Jare Ajayi, the organization expressed its disapproval of the actions taken by those claiming to represent the Yoruba people.
Daily Post reported that the incident, which occurred at the Oyo State House of Assembly premises in Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan, saw individuals purportedly advocating for a ‘Democratic Republic of the Yoruba’, claiming secession from Nigeria. However, Afenifere categorically stated that there is no such entity as the Democratic Republic of Yoruba.
“Yoruba is an important component of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And as is well known, there cannot be a sovereign republic within an extant sovereign republic,” Ajayi emphasized in the statement.
He acknowledged that while there are challenges and dysfunctions in Nigeria’s governance, violent divisions are not the solution. Afenifere stressed the need for dialogue and constructive engagement to address the perceived wrongs in the country, rather than resorting to actions that undermine the unity and stability of Nigeria.
